JAMES ARTHUR GIELOW
James Arthur Gielow was born April 23, 1974, in Buffalo, N.Y. He attended the State University of New York at Buffalo where he received his Bachelors Degree in Photography in 1998 under the tutelage of Les Krims. James also worked as a freelance photographer for the NPPA / Reuters News Pictures and the KC Kratt commercial photography studio. In Buffalo, he exhibited at the Upton Gallery in 1996 and 1997, and at the Campos Gallery in 1997 (Porn Series) and 1998 (Assorted Flavors).
In 1999, James relocated to San Diego where he went to work as a freelance photographer. From 2001-2005, he also worked as an independent Op-Ed illustrator for several publications, including The Espresso; San Diegos Coffeehouse & Café Newspaper, Fahrenheit; San Diego Independent Weekly, and The Beast, a Buffalo, N.Y. weekly independent newspaper. In December 2004, James was hired as a temporary employee at the San Diego Museum of Art in their design and installation department, and, the following year, was offered a permanent position as Lead Carpenter-Preparator. In July 2009, James was promoted to Chief Preparator at the San Diego Museum of Art.
